A
non-toxic form of Pseudomonas exotoxin A (ntPE) rapidly traverses intact
epithelia, hence, it has the potential to act as a “vehicle” for
the delivery of various “payloads” (e.g., antigens or biotherapeutics).
There are several characteristics of this system that make it ideal for
the purpose and, in addition, suitable for the development of therapeutics:
| |
Genetic
construction of ntPE chimeras containing antigenic epitopes can
be achieved easily without altering the transport
properties of the molecule
ntPE chimeras are extremely stable to chemical and physical damage
Antigenic
epitopes inserted into ntPE chimeras have been shown to provide
sustained systemic and mucosal responses
ntPE chimeras are simple to administer at mucosal surfaces
